Horticulture in action

Social and therapeutic horticulture, food growing and horticultural therapy are aspects of green care that promotes social, health and emotional well being in a horticultural setting.

Trellis is the network for theapeutic gardening in Scotland.  Their factsheet expalins the benefits of horticulture as therapy.  We also linked in to this in our cases studies at Knockfarrel Croft where they work with volunteers to produce a wide range of fruit and vegetables for sale.

Social farms and Gardens also offers access to a range of health and safety resources to set up a community gardening project which can help get you started on your social crofting venture.

To resource your activity you may want to set up local food networks with other producers to sell what you grow and reinvest your income in the croft.  There are a number of ways to do this from starting a small honesty box, to local box schemes or even online using hubs such as the Open Food Network.
